A Sheep Gate Entry

Writer's picture: Bro. Garry McDevittBro. Garry McDevitt

“And a very great multitude spread their clothes on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road. Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying:

“Hosanna to the Son of David! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!’ Hosanna in the highest!”

And when He had come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, “Who is this?””

‭‭(Matthew‬ ‭21:4-5, 8-10‬ ‭NKJV‬‬) Jesus did something amazing and prophecy fulfilling, when He rode into Jerusalem the Sunday before His crucifixion.

It is believed, that Jesus entered the Temple Mount through what is known as the Sheep Gate, when he entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. That gate, was the gate through which they drove the lambs into the Temple area to be examined for sacrifice. It was known as the Sheep Gate, because the sacrifices for worship were brought through this very gate. Here they would undergo scrutiny before they were accepted.

And the religious and political leaders did just that to Jesus! They questioned Him, watched Him, tried Him, and accused Him, never able to pin anything on Him, and then killed Him anyway.

Every year this happened at Passover. The year that Jesus made His entry, it happened for real!

But it had to be, our sin has a price, and it is the blood and life of the Innocent.

We celebrate Palm Sunday because it was on this Day, Jesus presented Himself as the true Passover Lamb.
